Dog Days at Sloan's Lake
City living is not just for trendy urbanites, but also for your fur babies. According to a report by dog-walking company, Rover, Denver, CO ranks third in dog-friendliness of over 14,000 American cities and towns, and is second only to Seattle, WA and Chicago, IL. With Sloan’s Lake just a stone’s - or ball - throw away from The Julian, keeping an active pup in the Mile High City could not be easier.
Whether you’re an early-bird or a master-of-the-snooze-button, watching the sun rise from Sloan’s Lake’s west bank is marvelous and never gets old. Picture the Denver skyline’s dark silhouette outlined in an electric-yellow lining. As the sun comes up, a honey-golden glow burns off the remaining traces of a moody-indigo night sky. One feels grounded starting their morning before the city wakes, and the sight from Sloan’s Lake with a warm coffee is worth it.
After viewing the sunrise, take your dog to the trails around Sloan’s Lake. If you stick to the path hugging the water’s edge, you’ll log about 2.5 miles. If you run the perimeter of Sloan’s Lake Park – or, along the roads just inside it - the distance is about 3.25 miles. End your run at Rupert’s at the Edge near West 22nd Avenue and Sheridan, where you can enjoy a lake-side breakfast (we recommend Rupert’s banana nut bread French toast and mimosas) on their dog-friendly patio.
Take You and Your Pup for a Treat
Sloan’s Lake is surrounded by many great eateries and craft breweries with shaded, dog-friendly areas. A Sloan’s Lake favorite is Joyride Brewing, located at West 25th Avenue and Sheridan. Not only does Joyride pour a refreshing selection of Colorado craft beer, this community staple also serves up lake and city views from its new rooftop patio. Joyride partners with Denver’s best food trucks, offering an assortment of culinary options.
Picnics are welcome at Sloan’s Lake — just remember to be considerate and take whatever trash you brought into the park. Setting up picnic blankets around the Lake’s east coast offers an afternoon treat with a sunset that sinks behind the royal Rocky Mountains. You, your friends, and – most importantly – your dog will have experienced why so many Denver locals love the weekends living around Sloan’s Lake.
